Henderson County closed out its preseason on a strong note Tuesday night, defeating Owensboro Catholic 66-53 at Colonel Gym in the final tune-up for both teams.
Junior Amare Stewart paced the Colonels with 17 points and 5 rebounds, while fellow junior Xavion Johnson added 15 points and a team-high 9 boards. Jaren Byrum knocked down three 3-pointers on his way to 9 points and also pulled down 6 rebounds. Malachi Taylor provided a spark off the bench with 8 points and 3 rebounds.
Henderson County was sharp at the line, converting 16 of 20 free throws, and won the rebounding battle 36-27. Owensboro Catholic played without a couple of key big men who remain with the football team preparing for Friday’s state semifinal. Solly Smith led the Aces with 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Jake Murphy added 10 points and 3 boards and Mikes Grant finished with 9 points and 8 rebounds.
The Colonels led 17-15 after one quarter, built a 31-21 halftime advantage, and carried a 48-38 lead into the fourth.
Henderson County opens the regular season on Tuesday, December 2, hosting defending Region 3 champion Daviess County at 7:30 p.m.
