The Henderson County Lady Colonels picked up a hard-fought 53-47 road victory over Breckinridge County Friday night in Harned.
Henderson set the tone early, jumping out to a 16-7 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Colonels pushed the advantage to 18 late in the second quarter, but Breckinridge closed the half with the final five points to trim the margin to 30-17 at the break. Henderson led 36-31 after three as the Lady Tigers continued to chip away.
Breckinridge briefly took a one-point lead with just under four minutes to play, but A’Tylia Green answered with a clutch three-pointer and then went 6-of-8 at the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
Turnovers played a major role, swinging momentum between halves. Henderson won the turnover battle in the first half forcing 13 on the Lady Tigers, while giving up only 5 of their own. Breckinridge flipped the script in the second half, forcing 15 Henderson turnovers while surrendering 9 to claw back into the game.
Green led the way with 24 points—13 of them in the fourth quarter—and added nine rebounds. She was the only Lady Colonel to make a field goal in the second half aside from a basket by Maggee Melvin. Jersey Gardner finished with nine points, JaNyla Locher added eight, Addy Gish chipped in seven points and five rebounds, Callie Burnett had three points and six rebounds, and Melvin finished with two points and five boards.
Henderson went 16-of-26 from the free-throw line and 3-of-12 from three-point range. Breckinridge County finished 12-of-15 at the stripe and 5-of-17 from beyond the arc, and held a slim 31-30 rebounding edge.
Henderson County improves to 11-7 on the season and returns to action Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. on the road at Christian County (6-6).
