Lady Colonels Fall to Sacred Heart

Four-time defending state champion Sacred Heart defeated Henderson 59-46 Saturday afternoon in Louisville as part of the Mercy Academy Basketball Classic.

After falling to Frederick Douglass 83-63 on Friday night, the Valkyries came out with more energy and physicality, forcing 9 Henderson turnovers in the opening quarter and jumping out to a 19-10 lead. Sacred Heart extended the advantage to 39-21 at halftime.

The Lady Colonels responded to head coach Stephen Haile’s message in the locker room and played much better in the second half, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Henderson finished with 18 turnovers, while Sacred Heart had 13. The Valkyries turned those miscues into 19 points, compared to 12 for Henderson. The Lady Colonels shot 19-of-54 (35%) from the field, while Sacred Heart finished 24-of-58 (41%).

A’Tylia Green led Henderson with 17 points and 6 rebounds. JaNyla Locher had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Addy Gish finished with 7 points and 6 rebounds. Maggee Melvin added 6 points and 2 rebounds. Callie Burnett had 5 points and 4 rebounds. Nevaeh Dixon finished with 2 points and 2 rebounds, and Kenley Evans added 1 point and 3 rebounds.

Henderson is back in action Monday at home at 7 p.m. against McLean County.
