Colonels Charge to Region with District Title Win Over Union


The Henderson County Colonels dominated the glass and controlled the defensive end to defeat the Union County Braves 74-49 Thursday night in the 6th District Championship at Webster County High School in Dixon.

Henderson jumped out to a 19-6 lead after the first quarter and carried a 35-16 advantage into halftime. The Colonels shot 5-10 from three in the opening half — with two early makes from Amare Stewart and three off the bench from Wyatt Townsend — and extended the lead to 54-27 after three quarters.

For the game, Henderson finished 6-15 from beyond the arc and 8-15 at the free-throw line. Union went 5-14 from three and 10-19 at the line. The Colonels controlled the boards 47-28 and committed just four turnovers compared to nine by the Braves.

Xavion Johnson led Henderson with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Amare Stewart added 12 points and 4 rebounds, while Wyatt Townsend scored 9 points off the bench. Braden Williams had 8 points and 3 rebounds, Zayden Martin 6 points and 6 rebounds, and Travis Little 6 points and 3 rebounds. MaLaikye Taylor finished with 4 points and 5 rebounds. Landon Smith contributed 3 points and 2 rebounds. Zeph Thomas and JahMarion Isabel each had 2 points and 2 rebounds. Kingston Shidler scored 2, and Alexavier Jones added 2 points with an alley-oop dunk to cap the night. Mikey Woolfork had 1 point and 2 rebounds.

Johnson, Martin, Stewart, and Taylor were named to the All-District Team.

Henderson County (24-4) takes a 13-game winning streak into next week’s Region 2 Tournament in Madisonville. The Colonels will play either Wednesday or Thursday, with opponent and time to be determined at Saturday morning’s regional draw.
