Colonels Road to Rupp Begins Wednesday vs Christian

The Henderson County Colonels will begin their quest for a second straight Region 2 championship on Wednesday night when they face Christian County in the opening round of the boys’ tournament at Madisonville‑North Hopkins High School. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Henderson County enters the postseason as the defending region champion for the first time since 1999, and the program has never won back‑to‑back titles. Head coach Tyler Smithhart, now in his 13th season, said the focus is not on history or the bracket—but on the next 32 minutes.

“It’s always a blessing and an exciting time when you get to be in the regional tournament,” Smithhart said. “We never take that for granted. But none of the path matters. Nothing after Wednesday exists. We have to go earn Wednesday night.”

A Different Christian County Team This Time

The Colonels defeated Christian County 71–26 on January 13 in one of their most complete performances of the season. But Smithhart cautioned that the regular‑season meeting means little now.

“We didn’t see their best up here earlier in the season,” he said. “If you look backward instead of forward, it can get you in trouble. They’ve been playing a lot better basketball lately.”

Smithhart said the key to January’s win was Henderson County’s defensive commitment—particularly keeping Christian County out of the paint and limiting touches for standout forward Rahsean Stevenson, who averages 16 points and 10 rebounds per game on an efficient 73 percent shooting clip.

“We did a really good job of neutralizing him,” Smithhart said. “We were physical, we bodied up, and we rebounded. He makes a living on second‑chance opportunities, and we didn’t allow many.”

Henderson County also generated a large portion of its offense in transition, something Smithhart said remains central to their identity.

“When we’re defending and rebounding, that starts our offense,” he said. “Our offense is at its best when it’s predicated on our defense.”

Momentum Built on Consistency

Henderson County enters the tournament on a 13‑game winning streak, but Smithhart said the value of that run isn’t in the record—it’s in the habits built along the way.

“To have that level of consistency requires attention to detail,” he said. “It requires good preparation every day and a group of guys who want to keep getting better. That’s the separator this time of year.”

Smithhart said the team’s discipline has been especially impressive given the long season, improving weather, and the natural distractions that come with late February.

“Our guys have stayed on edge about getting better,” he said. “That preparation always shows up in big moments.”

Keys to Cutting Down the Nets Again

As the Colonels look to defend their title, Smithhart said three elements will determine whether they can return to Rupp Arena:

  • Poise in pressure moments. “This time of year can be stressful. Our guys have maintained composure all season, and that’s key.”
  • Defense and rebounding. “Those are heart‑and‑guts stats. They’re controllable, and they have to show up every night.”
  • Offensive execution. Henderson County struggled early in the season to find rhythm and chemistry, but Smithhart said the team’s efficiency has climbed significantly in recent weeks. “Assists are up, shooting numbers are up. Our guys are making the right pass and the right play.”

Experience also plays a role. Junior point guard Xavion Johnson and sharpshooter Amari Stewart both delivered in last year’s postseason run, and Smithhart believes that matters.

“They’ve been in these moments,” he said. “They know the preparation it takes to get to Rupp. That confidence and wisdom will be important.”

Henderson County (23-4) and Christian County (13-13) will meet Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Region 2 Tournament, with the defending champions looking to take the first step toward a historic repeat.
