The Henderson County Lady Colonels saw their season come to an end Wednesday morning in the first round of the KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament, falling to the Frederick Douglass Broncos 44-23 in Lexington.
Henderson struggled offensively, turning in its toughest shooting performance of the season. The Lady Colonels finished just 6-for-39 from the field (15%) and made only one field goal in each of the first, second, and fourth quarters.
Frederick Douglass jumped out to a 9-0 lead early before Henderson closed the opening period with four straight points to trail 12-6 after one quarter. The Broncos gradually pulled away in the second, taking a 24-8 lead into halftime.
Despite strong defensive stretches in the third quarter that produced several stops, Henderson couldn’t cut into the deficit as Douglass maintained control, leading 33-17 after three.
Only two Lady Colonels scored field goals in the game. A’Tylia Green led the way with four baskets and knocked down both of Henderson’s three-pointers. Nevaeh Dixon added two field goals off the bench. Green finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Dixon had 5 points and 5 boards. Gish had 4 points from the line and 3 rebounds. Parker knocked down 2 free throws in the final minute and Melvin had 1. Henderson finished 2-for-12 from beyond the arc and 9-for-14 from the free-throw line.
Frederick Douglass shot 17-for-40 from the field, including 6-for-16 from three-point range, and went 4-for-11 at the free-throw line.
The rebounding and turnover margins were close, with the Broncos holding a slight 30-29 advantage on the boards. Henderson committed 17 turnovers compared to 16 for Douglass.
The Lady Colonels conclude their season with a 24-10 record.
