An investigation is underway following the death of an inmate at the Vanderburgh County Jail late Wednesday night.
The incident occurred just before midnight in one of the housing units. Jail officers and medical staff responded to an inmate experiencing a medical emergency.
Life-saving measures were immediately initiated, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator. Emergency medical personnel from the Evansville Fire Department and AMR arrived on scene to provide additional care.
Despite resuscitation efforts the inmate could not be revived. The deceased was a 33-year-old woman.
The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office was notified and will release further information regarding the inmate’s identity and the official cause of death after next of kin have been notified and their investigation is complete.
In accordance with Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office policy, an external agency is conducting the investigation. The Indiana State Police is leading the inquiry, while the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Section is conducting a parallel internal review.
