LEXINGTON, Ky. — Henderson County’s remarkable run of state softball success came to an end Saturday night at John Cropp Stadium as the Lady Colonels fell to George Rogers Clark 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the KHSAA State Softball Tournament.
The loss closed the curtain on another outstanding season for Henderson County, which finished 28-9 and reached the state tournament for the sixth consecutive year. The Lady Colonels entered the tournament having advanced to each of the previous three state championship games, winning the KHSAA state title in 2024 and finishing as state runner-up in both 2023 and 2025.
George Rogers Clark (38-5) struck first in the opening inning. After an error allowed leadoff hitter Bella Guinn to reach base, the Lady Cardinals capitalized when Lilli Hill drove a double to left field to bring home the game’s first run.
Henderson County answered in the bottom of the second. Kam Timmons drew a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Pacey Parker. One batter later, Lilly Bennett lined a double into left-center field, scoring Parker from first base and evening the score at 1-1.
The Lady Colonels had a prime opportunity to take the lead in the third inning. With 1 out, Saniya Shields singled up the middle, stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the George Rogers Clark catcher. With Shields standing 60 feet away, Henderson County head coach Shannon Troutman put the pressure on the Lady Cardinals. As the throw skipped past the center fielder backing up the play at second base, Shields broke for home. The ball rolled several feet away from the defender, but the center fielder quickly recovered, fired a strike to the plate and Shields was tagged out in a close play that kept the game tied at 1-1.

The deciding run came in the top of the fifth. Guinn opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by Addi Matthews. With runners on the corners and one out, Hill hit a ground ball that resulted in a fielder’s choice. Henderson County appeared to have a chance to turn an inning-ending double play, but could not complete the turn as Guinn crossed the plate with what proved to be the game-winning run.
George Rogers Clark pitcher Lilli Hill made the slim lead stand. The Lady Cardinals’ ace scattered three hits and struck out five in a complete-game effort, holding Henderson County scoreless over the final five innings.
Despite the loss, Henderson County received another strong performance from senior pitcher Kam Timmons. Timmons worked all seven innings, allowing six hits and just one earned run while striking out five. She finished her season with a 16-4 record and was later named to the KHSAA State Softball Tournament All-Tournament Team.
Lilly Bennett finished 1-for-3 with Henderson County’s lone RBI, while Shields and Ayden Bennett recorded the Lady Colonels’ other two hits.
While Saturday’s result ended Henderson County’s pursuit of another state championship, it did little to diminish one of the most successful eras in program history. The Lady Colonels captured their sixth consecutive Second Region championship this spring, reached the state quarterfinals, and finished among Kentucky’s final eight teams for the fifth straight season.
