Medical Run Turns Into Officer Involved Fatal Shooting After Evansville Detective Shot At

Evansville Police said a medical run turned into an officer involved fatal shooting after a detective was shot at on Thursday afternoon.

The man who allegedly fired at the detective was killed after shots were exchanged.

Evansville officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Colonial Avenue at about 1 p.m. Thursday in reference to a medical emergency response. The caller reported that a man was possibly overdosing at this location.

An on-duty, plain clothes detective was in the area and responded after hearing the run dispatched.

After arriving the detective retrieved his department-issued Narcan and approached the home. Due to his plain clothes status, police said the detective openly displayed his badge on a lanyard around his neck and announced himself as a police officer.

A woman allowed the detective inside the home. A juvenile female was also inside the home.

The man was reportedly down a hallway inside the home. As the detective approached and looked around a corner, a white man was pointing a gun in their direction.

The woman exited the home, leaving the juvenile female inside, as the detective retreated to the living room.

As the man approached, he fired at the detective. The detective returned fire before retreating outside the home and taking cover in the front yard.

The man followed, pointing his gun at both the woman on scene and the detective. The detective fired additional shots until the threat was stopped.

The suspect was provided on-scene emergency care but did not survive his injuries. A press conference will be held Friday to provide additional information. The detective was not injured in this incident.
