Johnnie D. Hurst, Sr., age 70, of Henderson, KY, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, KY.
Johnnie was a 22-year Veteran retiree of the U.S. Navy and worked as a Union Representative for the United States Postal Service Evansville Distribution Center. He was a member of the American Legion Worsham Post #40 and served as a commander before having to step down due to health reasons. Johnnie saw the good in everyone while helping people believe in themselves and encouraging others to be the best of their potential. He enjoyed playing darts, fishing in the Green River, and spending time alone on his boat. Johnnie loved his family and grandchildren dearly.
He was preceded in death by parents Thomas and Imogene Hurst, son William Patrick Hurst, and siblings: Normas, Marjorie, William “Bill”, Ida Mae, Barbara, Betty, and Alton “Al”.
Johnnie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon Hurst; sons Johnnie Hurst, Jr. and Richard Gross, both of Henderson, KY; daughter Michele Burnett of Concordia, MO; sisters Shelvie Hurst of Livingston, KY, Janice Stevens of Covington, KY, and Geraldine Allen of WV; brothers Doyle Hurst and Steven Hurst, both of Corbin, KY; and his grandchildren: Kelsie, Alex, Lillian, Austin, and Billy.
Relatives and friends are invited to Johnnie’s Life Celebration from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Sunday, and again on Monday starting at 9:00 am until service time at Benton-Glunt & Tapp Funeral Home in Henderson, KY. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Henderson, KY. Military honors will be rendered by the American Legion Worsham Post #40.
