The Green River District Health Department is recognizing National Breastfeeding Month throughout August and World Breastfeeding Week, observed August 1–7, by highlighting the benefits of
breastfeeding and the free support available through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
The 2026 National Breastfeeding Month theme, “RISE: Resilience, Interdependence, Self-Determination, Empowerment,” celebrates the strength of breastfeeding families and the importance of community support.
This year’s World Breastfeeding Week theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” encourages communities to build on programs and partnerships that help
families reach their infant feeding goals.
“Breastfeeding offers lifelong health benefits for both babies and mothers, and every family deserves access to the education and support needed to make informed feeding decisions,” said Stephanie Johnson, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program Supervisor and WIC Program Coordinator. “Through WIC, we are committed to providing personalized breastfeeding support before and after birth.”
WIC helps pregnant and postpartum individuals, infants, and children up to age five get a healthy start by providing breastfeeding support, healthy foods, nutrition education, and referrals to healthcare and community resources.
WIC services are available at all seven Green River District Health Department health centers and at the Providence Elementary School site in Webster County.
