2020 Rotary  Scholarship Recipients Announced


The Rotary Club and the Rotaract Club of Henderson are pleased to announce the recipients of their 2020 College Scholarships:

Lauren Alexander, daughter of Jeremy and Jill Alexander. Ms. Alexander plans to attend Auburn University.
Madison Baker, daughter of Amy Lancaster. Ms. Baker plans to attend the University of Kentucky.
Aubrey Dekemper, daughter of Tammy and Damon DeKemper. She plans to attend the University of Kentucky.
Bryce Dhom, son of Tom and Kelly Dhom. He plans to attend University of Louisville.
Jacob Latimer, son of Joseph and Jennifer Latimer. Jacob plans to attend Western Kentucky University.
Rachel Reid, daughter of Robert Reid and Beverly Reid. Ms. Reid plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University.
Kayla Wayne, daughter of Jeff and Bridgette Wayne. She plans to attend the University of Kentucky.

“The scholarship process was especially competitive this year with many outstanding applications submitted,” said Rotary/Rotaract Scholarship Chair Rob Toerne. “The winners have all shown outstanding academic accomplishments, along with strong commitment to service. Rotary and Rotaract are honored to support their educational endeavors.” In addition to Toerne, the other individuals serving on this year’s Scholarship Committee include Jennifer Andrews, Cyndee Burton, Mark Chumbler, Kelsey Hargis, Rich Martindale, Dennis Moran, Ray Nix, and KT Williams.

The process for selecting the participants had to be altered this year because of the pandemic. “Each year, Rotary and Rotaract look forward to meeting each one of the recipients and their parents in addition to celebrating their accomplishments,” explained Rotary President Dawn S. Kelsey. “But due to the pandemic, our clubs are unable to do this in-person. Instead, Rotary compiled a presentation using videos created by each scholar, so that our members have the opportunity to get to know these amazing students.” The video can be viewed on the Rotary Henderson Ky YouTube Channel.

Founded in 1917, the Rotary Club of Henderson is among the oldest and largest Rotary clubs in Kentucky. Rotary has a long history of support for schools and education in Henderson. Each year, in addition to its college scholarships awarded, the Rotary Club supplies dictionaries to every third grader in Henderson County, sponsors the Rotary Field Day for elementary students, provide coats to the schools’ Family Resource Centers, and provided the lead gift for the Rotary Colonels 2 College scholarship program. Further, Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, As the world’s largest private provider of international scholarships helps more than 1,000 students annually to study abroad and serve as cultural ambassadors. Rotary also partners with seven prestigious universities around the world to provide opportunities to earn a master’s degree in peace and conflict and resolution.

Rotary is an international volunteer organization of 1.2 million business and professional leaders united worldwide to promote humanitarian service and help build goodwill and peace. About 32,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries conduct projects to address today’s challenges—including illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water and environmental concerns—while encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations.
Since 1985, Rotary’s top priority has been to eradicate polio worldwide. This 35-year effort has helped reduce the number of polio cases by 99 percent. Rotary club members has raised more than $1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.
