HENDERSON, KY, October 22, 2020 - Autumn leaves are starting to fall, and the City of Henderson's Public Works Department will soon start vacuuming leaves that have been raked to the edge of the street.
The Henderson Water Utility and Public Works remind property owners NOT to rake leaves out INTO the street because they can get into storm water drains and cause problems such as localized flooding when the drains are clogged with leaves. Raking leaves into the street is, in fact, a violation of City ordinance.
You may place your leaves near the street or edge of your lawn so the vacuum truck can reach them. Please keep them away from obstacles such as parked cars so the vacuum can do its best work. Also, please prevent sticks and other debris from getting mixed in with your leaves if possible. If they are "clean" they can be reused for compost.
City crews also will collect bags of leaves. Please keep them separated from your regular trash.
When your loose leaves or bagged leaves are ready for pickup, call the Public Works Department at 270-831-1234 to get on the collection schedule.
The Public Works Department will continue to vacuum loose leaves and collect bagged leaves until the end of the leaf season, which will likely run through Dec. 31 unless weather conditions cause a need for an extension.
Call the Public Works Department at (270) 831-1234 with your questions.
In another topic pertaining to sanitation collections, Public Work Director Brian Williams is asking households that are in possession of an unused recycling cart to call Public Works at (270) 831-1234. A crew member will be dispatched to pick it up.
Currently there are about 70 households on a waiting list for recycling carts. Returning an unused cart will give someone else interested in recycling an opportunity to participate.
