The (1-0) Henderson County Colonels continued their season by taking on the (1-1) Christian County Colonels in Hopkinsville at The Stadium of Champions last night.
The Colonels would play defense first to open up the game as the Colonel defense started out strong as the Colonels stopped Christian County on their first drive of the game. With 4:11 to go in the first quarter, the Colonels capped off a 7 play 79 yard drive with a 30 yard touchdown run by senior running back Jordan Wright to give Henderson a 7-0 lead. Then with 30 seconds to play in the first quarter, the Colonels finished off a 7 play 53 yard drive with a 21 yard touchdown run by senior running back Jaheim Williams that gave Henderson a 14 point lead heading into the second quarter. With 5:15 to go in the first half, the Colonels defense came up big with a huge turnover, in which senior linebacker Luke Dalton forced a block punt and recovered the football himself for a touchdown as the Colonels would lead 28-0. Less than 30 seconds left in the first half, the Colonels would finish off a 8 play 40 yard drive with sophomore quarterback Dru Meadows running it in from 4 yards out as the Colonels would go for the two point conversion and convert on a 2 yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Turner Mattingly. This would give the Colonels a 36-0 lead heading into halftime.
16 seconds into the second half, Colonels senior running back Jordan Wright returned the kickoff for 83 yards and the touchdown as the Colonels would hold a 43-0 lead over Christian County with 11:44 to go in the third quarter. Then with 1:19 to play in the third quarter, freshman quarterback Deameion Leavell threw a 49 yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Elijah Underhillto narrow Henderson’s lead to 43-7. The only other score in the game came from Christian County when freshman quarterback Deameion Leavell threw a 44 yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Prince Northington with 1:18 to play in the game. The Henderson County Colonels would win by a score of 43-14 over the Christian County Colonels as Henderson County improves to (2-0) while Christian County falls to (1-2) on the season.
Senior running back Jordan Wright led the Colonels in rushing with 11 carries for 143 yards and two rushing touchdowns while senior running back Jaheim Williams rushed for 3 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Max Thompson for the Henderson County Colonels was 4 for 4 with 37 yards in the air.
The Colonels defense held the Christian County Colonels to 154 yards of total offense on the night. The Colonels offense looked great as they recorded 375 yards of total offense with 306 being on the ground. The Colonels had 19 first downs and had 3 turnovers on the night, as well as 5 penalties for 50 yards and was 3 for 4 on third down.
The Colonels will take on the Boyle County Rebels on the road in Danville next Friday night with the kickoff set to begin at 7:00 P.M. CT/ 8:00 P.M. ET.
