Colonels Look to Keep Winning Streak Going in Week 3 Against the Rebels
The (2-0) Henderson County Colonels rolled in game 2 of the 2022 high school football season as the Colonels took down the Christian County Colonels 43-14 last Friday night in Hopkinsville.
Henderson County Colonel Head Football Coach Josh Boston was asked about some of the advantages the Colonels might have over Week 3 opponent the Boyle County Rebels coming into tonight’s game. Coach Boston discussed how the Colonels are going to have to play in order to stay with the Rebels. “I wouldn’t say there are any advantages either way. I feel like it’s an even matchup, nobody’s bigger, nobody’s faster, nobody’s stronger. It’s going to come down to who makes the most mistakes, who plays the cleanest game, and who can find advantages on special teams. That’s going to be key and so it’s going to come down to who can play the most mistake-free football. When you’ve got two football teams that haven’t played a four-quarter game yet, there’s going to be mistakes on both sides and so try to minimize those mistakes the best you can and play fast.
When asked what film he had seen on film on the Hudl app that sticks out to him, Coach Boston talks about the winning program that Boyle County has created over the last several years. “The biggest thing is they know how to win. They’re on a fifteen-game win streak, back-to-back state championships. Their kids expect to win and that’s one thing that is part of growing and maturing a program. You’ve got to develop that into them and that’s the biggest thing that stands out. They’ve got a few transfers in this year and their standout athletes. Their number one player on offense is a transfer in, a sophomore, probably one of the better players in Central Kentucky, Quisenberry kid, and then you got the quarterback transfer from Danville two years ago whenever he had to play behind the quarterback last year. He played corner for them but he was young when he started at quarterback as a sophomore in Danville. He’s got varsity experience and he’s great with the ball in his hands, a great athlete. They got guys that can get the ball down the field, as far as speed wise and that kind of stuff we just got to make sure that we’re disciplined sound at all times.”
Coach Boston was asked about the style of play on offense for the Boyle County Rebels run every game, he discussed the multiple formations they might run. “Very multiple formations but when it comes down to it they want to run counter, they want to run stretch. They want to try to find that edge and then play action pass, get the ball down the field. They’re going to throw some screens to try and widen you out a little bit. We’ve got to do a lot better on screens this week, we gave up a touchdown on a screen last week, gave up big plays versus Calloway County on screens. We’ve adjusted our starting lineup a little bit on defense, Jaheim’s gonna start at corner tonight, gonna take some perimeter game and help us out there. Gonna start to help minimize those mistakes on the perimeter and we got to stop counter inside.”
When asked what the Rebels like doing defensively, Coach Boston discussed their formation and their defensive game plan. “They are sound, they don’t do a whole lot. They’re gonna lineup in a 4-4, they’re gonna lineup in a 4-3. Blitzing wise they’re going to very little gonna blitz but they’re going to squeeze everything off, keep it in front of them, going to try and spill everything to the edge and rally the football.”
Coach Boston discussed his decision to start sophomore quarterback Trajdon Davis for Week 3 against the Rebels and the game plan he and his coaching staff decided to go with for this huge game on the road tonight. “It’s not about who won the job. Up until this point, we’ve been dividing the reps fifty-fifty and when you do that you got two different gameplans. You’ve got one gameplan for one guy, you’ve got one gameplan for the other. We knew going into this game, the caliber of game it was that you know we couldn’t go in with two different gameplans, we couldn’t split our reps. We had to, for this game, we had to make a decision for this week and we did the same thing last year. You know Drew ended up getting the start for this game last year and then Gobin came back and won the job. It’s kind of one of those things you know that for this week we knew that when you’re going up against a Boyle County type program, you can’t go in with two gameplans and so we each had to sit down as a staff, and say alright production wise who’s been what, grades wise who’s been what and just had to kind of make a decision. We felt like that gameplan-wise what we needed to do this week, that we needed to narrow it down. So Trajdon is going to get the start this week. It’s like we told Max like this isn’t some permanent decision, it’s just what we needed to do for the team this week, we needed to narrow it down to one guy this week. Like I said this, that same thing happened last year and then the other quarterback ended up coming back and winning the job back. It’s just one of the things that raise the competitiveness of the kids and we had to do what we felt was best for the gameplan this week.”
An impressive stat so far this season only two games into the season and the Colonels as a team have 768 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns.
The (2-0) Henderson County Colonels go on the road tonight to take on the (2-0) Boyle County Rebels in Danville with the kickoff at 7:00 P.M. Central Time/ 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time.
