Fire destroys Little Dixie home; no one home at the time

A Henderson County family lost their home Monday night in a house fire.

Cairo Volunteer Fire Chief Keith Phillips said no one was home when a fire broke out at a house in the 8400 block of Dixon 1 Road last night. The homeowner told Phillips that the family had left the home at about 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Neighbors reported the fire at about 6:15 last night. Phillips said the roof of the home was already fully engulfed when firefighters arrived a few minutes later.

Cairo and Niagara Volunteer Fire Departments were initially called to the scene. Phillips said he also requested Poole and Niagara Volunteer Fire Departments for their support and tanker trucks.

Kenergy, Emergency Management Agency and Emergency Medical Services also responded at the scene.

The Red Cross was also at the scene, initially providing rehab for firefighters then getting in touch with the homeowners.

A family of five lived at the home, including parents and three children, ages 9, 6 and 1.  Phillips said the family lost everything in the fire.

Phillips said the last of the firefighters left near midnight. The home was a total loss, but a carport was still standing.

Phillips said the home’s roof had caved in, piling up debris. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
