Lyon County Basketball Region King's Again

The Hopkinsville Tigers faced off against the Lyon County Lyons in the 2nd Region Championship Game at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School in Madisonville.

 

In the opening period, the Tigers would outscore the Lyons 28-20, as Tiger junior forward Antonio Williams scored 17 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in the quarter. In the second period, the Lyons would outscore the Tigers 24-11, as the Lyons would have a 5 point lead at halftime with the score 44-39.

To begin the second half, the Tigers would outscore the Lyons 19-17, as Tiger senior guard Bubba Leavell scored 11 points in the quarter as the Lyons would hold a 3 point lead with the score 61-58 heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth and final period, the Lyons would outscore the Tigers 15-12, as Lyon junior guard Travis Perry scored 10 points in the quarter as the Lyons would go on to win their second Region Championship in a row with the final score 76-70. The Lyons improve their record to (30-5) while the Tigers season ends with a (15-17) record. 

The leading scorer for the Lyons was junior guard Travis Perry with 33 points and 6 rebounds while shooting 2 for 11 from the three point line and 9 for 10 from the free throw line while also recording 2 assists and 3 steals on the night. Junior guard Jack Reddick scored 24 points and grabbed 3 rebounds while shooting 4 for 7 from the three point line and 6 for 8 from the free throw line while also recording 4 assists. Junior forward Brady Shoulders contributed 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists while shooting 3 for 6 from the three point line while freshman forward Carson Collins tallied 2 points. To round out the scoring for the Lyons, freshman guard Bray Kirk added 2 points and 8 rebounds on the night. 

As a team, the Lyons were 9 for 25 (36%) from the three point line and shot 17 for 21 (81%) from the free throw line while grabbing 35 total rebounds and committing 5 turnovers on the night. The Lyons also added 14 assists, 3 blocks, and 4 steals. 

 

The leading scorer for the Tigers was senior guard Bubba Leavell with 25 points and 5 rebounds while shooting 4 for 5 from the three point line and 5 for 6 from the free throw line while also recording 3 assists on the night. Junior forward Antonio Williams contributed 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks while senior guard KeiMarion Smith tallied 12 points while shooting 5 for 6 from the free throw line. Senior forward Jacob Gavin scored 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds while senior guard Gavarion Northington recorded 4 points and 3 rebounds. To round out the scoring for the Tigers, senior forward Isaiah Manning added 2 points and 5 rebounds on the night. 

 

As a team, the Tigers were 6 for 14 (43%) from the three point line and shot 12 for 14 (86%) from the free throw line while grabbing 28 total rebounds and committing 5 turnovers on the night. The Tigers also added 9 assists, 6 blocks, and 4 steals. 

Junior forward Brady Shoulders, junior guard Jack Reddick, and junior guard Travis Perry made the All-Region team based on regular season play. Junior forward Brady Shoulders, junior guard Jack Reddick,  junior guard Travis Perry, and senior guard Bradin Nelson made the 2nd Region All Tournament team based on tournament play. Junior guard Travis Perry wins 2nd Region Player of the Year voted by the 2nd Region Coaches.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Lyon County Lyons will take on the Newport Wildcats on Thursday afternoon, March 16th, at 12:30 P.M. Central Time at Rupp Arena in the opening round of the State Tournament.
