Union County Wrestler Gavin Ricketts Commits to Cleveland State University

By Ryan Davenport, WSON Sports Correspondent

Earlier this morning, Braves wrestler Gavin Ricketts signed to continue his athletic career wrestling for the Cleveland State University Vikings.

Ricketts talked about why Cleveland State University was the best fit for him, “Not only just being a Division 1 school, Cleveland State fits with everything I want to do with my education and my future. I’m going to be double majoring in math and biology and I want to end up in cancer research. The Cleveland Clinic is the number five cancer institute in the country so that really set me up with everything. I got into their honors school so overall I feel like it was the best fit for me.”

Ricketts discussed how it feels to be a college wrestler now, “It’s really cool. Over the past 4 years I’ve always watched my teammates go and sign at these (kind of) schools and heard about how elite the Division 1 level is. It’s really cool to know hard work paid off and I’m up there now.”

Ricketts talked about who he wanted to thank that made this day possible, “All glory goes to God. I couldn’t be here without my coaches, family, teammates, and everyone in this community.”

Ricketts discussed what made him want to sign and wrestle at the college level, “The pedigree of their coaches is very high. Head Coach (Josh) Moore wrestled at Penn State and was an All-American. When I first got into college wrestling I watched Assistant Coach (Devin) Schroder wrestle as well. On my visit it really just showed how the guys on the team and the coaches there, the way they live their lives is similar to mine and they’re all striving to be the best that they can be.”
