City of Henderson hosting fifth-graders Friday for city government lesson

HENDERSON, KY, April 27, 2023– On Friday, April 28th the City of Henderson will welcome over 100 local
fifth graders to the Henderson Municipal Center to learn more about their City government.

Students from East Heights and Spottsville Elementary Schools will start their day at the City of
Henderson by electing a mayor and city commissioners and appointing a city manager, city attorney,
and city clerk. They’ll then be presented two local “issues” by City staff members and students in the
audience will be encouraged to approach the podium and address the elected commissioners/mayor
and voice their opinion on how the “elected” officials should vote.

Throughout the process, Mayor Brad Staton will explain to the students what is happening and why it happens. They’ll also learn key terms
related to local government. Many local elected officials including, Henderson County Judge Executive
Brad Schneider and Henderson County Clerk Renesa Abner will be present to meet the students and talk
with them more about their roles in local government.

The idea behind this project is to teach students what happens in local government and how they can
have an impact even at a young age.
