The Henderson County Colonels hired a new Colonel baseball head coach. On Monday afternoon at Henderson County High School at a meet and greet event new Colonels head baseball coach Ted Thompson was introduced.

I was able to ask Coach Thompson some questions. Thompson talked about why he wanted to accept the job to be the Colonels next head baseball coach, “You just look at the history of Henderson and you look at the history of their program and then you just come on campus and then you just know right away that there is something special going on. There is a lot of good energy around here and I just like to think of it as one of the biggest kept secrets in Kentucky but yet one of the most exciting. It’s been really exciting and ever since I’ve been here it’s just been a great welcoming and it’s just been awesome.”

Thompson discussed where he has coached previously, “I’ve been a head coach as a Vincennes legion, a program in Vincennes, Indiana, I was an assistant coach for Vincennes University and an assistant coach at Vincennes Lincoln High School and then I was also an assistant coach at Castle High School and then I was a head coach at Tecumseh High School. I’ve also scouted for (the) Pittsburgh (Pirates) and also the New York Yankees so I’ve done that throughout my tenure and so it’s been a good opportunity through my years.”

Thompson discussed his coaching philosophy and how his coaching style, “I’m going to be a real high energy team and we are going to be a bunt hit and run, be aggressive, steal the bases and we’re going to look to put the ball in play and we’re going to be able to play really good defense, that’s one of the staples of what I really do is I work on the defense side of things and really pitch and defense is going to win championships.”

Thompson discussed how excited he is to be the new Colonels head baseball coach, “It is unbelievably exciting and I mean I’m really serious about that. A lot of people can say things but I have been a lot of places and I’m telling you there’s a great amount of energy here and it’s just great to be apart of the community and that’s one of the things I’m going to do is get right involved in the community and be supportive of all of our sports here at the high school and just looking to get ready to go in and work.”

Thompson discussed his vision for his team in the 2024 season and the expectations beyond this coming season, “To compete for a state championship every year. That’s the goal, that’s we play for, that’s what we practice for, anything less than that would be disappointing, however, you know you want to make good men out of these young men and that is also building character and so if we can raise good men someday beyond baseball then that is also what we’re here to do as well and to make sure they get a good education.”

Coach Ted Thompson was born and raised in Princeton, Indiana and went to college at Vincennes University and Florida Tech University. Thompson is married to his wife Sheri and they have four children and can’t wait to be involved in the Henderson Community.
