Colonels Open 2023 Season With Narrow Win Against Meade County

The Henderson County Colonels opened the 2023 Kentucky High School Football Season at home on their new turf field by taking on the Meade County Green Wave at Colonel Stadium in Henderson. 

 

The Green Wave would be the first to strike as junior quarterback Cade Scott would throw a 28 yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Bennett Hobbs, to cap off a 13 play 74 yard drive and give the Green Wave a early 7-0 lead over the Colonels with 7:44 to play in the first quarter. Then the Colonels would answer right back on a 9 play 65 yard drive that would end with a 11 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would tie the game at 7-7 with 3:19 to play in the first quarter. The Green Wave would take a 10 play 62 yard drive and capitalize with a 5 yard touchdown run by senior running back Stone Redmon, as after the made PAT, the Green Wave would take a 14-7 lead over the Colonels with 11:54 to play in the first half. The Colonels would then quickly respond with a 1 play 65 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would tie the game at 14-14 with the Green Wave with 11:36 to play in the first half. The Colonels defense would get a stop on the Green Wave offense and the Colonels took advantage of the defensive stop and capitalized on a 11 play 71 yard drive that ended with a 4 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as after the PAT, the Colonels would have their first lead over the Green Wave with the score 21-14 with 4:05 to play in the first half. The Colonels defense didn’t allow the Green Wave to score the rest of the half as the Colonels would go ahead by 7 into the locker room at halftime.

 

In the second half, the Green Wave would strike first on 3 plays for 64 yards and capitalize on a 55 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Cade Scott, as after the made PAT, the Green Wave would tie the game up at 21-21 with the Colonels with 9:04 to play in the third quarter. The Colonels would respond right back on their next drive with a 8 play 65 yard drive of their own that would end with a 8 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would retake the lead over the Green Wave 28-21 with 6:09 to play in the third quarter. The Green Wave would be the next to strike as they would cap off a 9 play 56 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Cade Scott, as after the made PAT, the Green Wave would tie the game back up at 28-28 with the Colonels with 9:36 to play in the game. The Colonels would respond right back on a 9 play 57 yard drive that would end with a 3 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to senior wide receiver Koien Banks, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would go back in front 35-28 over the Green Wave with 5:09 to play in the game. The Green Wave would then respond on a 6 play 66 yard drive with a 34 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Cade Scott to junior wide receiver Branson Stull, as the Green Wave would try to take the lead and go for the two point conversion but fail on an incomplete pass as the Colonels would still hold a 35-34 lead with 1:55 to play in the game. The Green Wave would kick an onside kick but the Colonels would recover and run out the clock and come away with a 1 point victory over the Green Wave with the final score 35-34. The Colonels improve to (1-0) on the season while the Green Wave fall to (0-1).

 

Colonel junior quarterback Trajdon Davis was 9 for 14 with 134 yards passing while throwing two touchdowns on the night. Junior running back Tony Burrus rushed 14 times for 117 rushing yards while junior quarterback back Trajdon Davis rushed 13 times with 115 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on the night. 

 

The Colonels as a team, had 232 yards rushing and 134 yards passing for a total of 366 yards of offense on the night. The Colonel’s defense held the Green Wave to 155 yards rushing and 196 passing yards on the night, as the Colonels forced 0 turnovers, 8 punts, and only allowed the Green Wave to 14 first downs on the night.

 

The Colonels will take on the South Warren Spartans next Friday night, August 25th, on the road in Bowling Green with the kickoff time at 7:00 P.M.
