Colonel Comeback Falls Short

The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the Central Hardin Bruins on the road in Elizabethtown.

 

The Bruins would be the first to strike as they would cap off a 5 play, 77 yard drive with a rushing touchdown by junior running back Jaxon Engstrand, as after the converted 2 point conversion, the Bruins would take an early 8-0 lead over the Colonels with 9:33 to play in the first quarter. The Bruins defense would stop the Colonels offense and then execute on the next drive after a 3 play, 60 yard drive with a 47 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Zak Spurrier to senior wide receiver Walker Meredith, as after the made PAT, the Bruins would extend their lead to 15-0 over the Colonels with 6:10 to play in the first quarter. The Colonels attempted a 26 yard field goal to end the first quarter but junior kicker Carson Weiss’s kick was short and no good. The Bruins would strike first in the second quarter on a 8 play, 51 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run by senior running back Mason Gardner, as after the missed PAT, the Bruins would go ahead 21-0 over the Colonels with 5:47 to play in the first half. The Colonels would get on the board capping off a 7 play, 47 yard drive on a 6 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to senior wide receiver Jackson Pendergraft, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would cut the deficit to 21-7 against the Bruins heading into halftime.

 

The Colonels would get the ball to start the second half capping off a 7 play, 65 yard drive with a 28 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the PAT was blocked, the Colonels cut the deficit to 21-13 with 8:58 to play in the third quarter. The Bruins would quickly respond on a 2 play, 77 yard drive with a 73 yard touchdown run by senior running back Mason Gardner, as after the converted 2 point conversion, the Bruins would extend their lead to 29-13 over the Colonels with 8:00 to play in the third quarter. The Colonels would score next on a 8 play, 64 yard drive that would result in a 11 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to junior wide receiver Luke Humphrey, as after the failed 2 point conversion, the Colonels would trail the Bruins 29-19 with 10:59 to play in the game. The Bruins would force a Colonels fumble and then on the next play would score on a 1 play, 1 yard touchdown run by senior running back Mason Gardner, as after the made PAT, the Bruins would extend their lead to 36-19 with 7:41 to play in the game. The Colonels would respond on a 5 play, 92 yard drive that would result in a 26 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the converted 2 point conversion by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, the Colonels would cut the deficit to 36-27 against the Bruins with 5:45 to play in the game. The Colonels would then get a big defensive stop and then execute on a 5 play, 68 yard drive with a 10 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to senior wide receiver Max Thompson, as after the converted 2 point conversion by Trajdon Davis, the Colonels would cut the Bruins lead to one, 36-35, with 1:09 to play in the game. The Colonels would try an onside kick but the ball would end up in the Bruins hands and the Bruins would run the clock out and end the Colonels comeback chances. The Bruins would come away with a 36-35 win over the Colonels. The Colonels fall to (1-2) on the season while the Bruins improve to a (2-1) record. 

 

Colonel junior quarterback Trajdon Davis was 20 for 31 with 318 yards, 5 touchdown passes, and 1 interception on the night. Junior running back Tony Burrus rushed 13 times for 32 rushing yards while junior quarterback back Trajdon Davis rushed 19 times with 30 rushing yards on the night. Junior wide receiver Luke Humphrey had 5 receptions with 70 yards and a touchdown reception, while junior running back Tony Burrus had 2 receptions for 54 yards and 2 touchdown receptions, and senior wide receiver Max Thompson had 2 receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown reception on the night.

 

Senior wide receiver Jackson Pendergraft had 11 receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown reception, as Pendergraft set a new school record for most passes caught in a single game. The previous record was 10 passes caught by 3 different Colonels, once by Rob Egan vs. Madisonville in 1997, second by Kobe Carter vs. Evansville North in 2014, and lastly by Isaac Anglin vs. Meade County in 2017.

 

The Colonels as a team, had 62 yards rushing and 318 yards passing for a total of 380 yards of offense on the night. The Colonel’s defense allowed the Bruins 213 yards rushing and 90 passing yards for a total of 303 yards of total offense on the night, as the Colonels forced 4 fumbles but none recovered, 5 punts, and allowed the Bruins 13 first downs. The Colonels had 10 penalties for 100 yards while the Bruins had 13 penalties for 122 yards on the night.

 

The Colonels will take on the Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado next Friday night, September 8th, at home at Colonel Stadium with the kickoff at 7:00 P.M.
