Colonels Look to Get Back in Win Column Against Blue Tornado

By Ryan Davenport, WSON Sports Correspondent

The Henderson County Colonels suffered a loss against the Central Hardin Bruins, 36-35, on the road in Elizabethtown last Friday night.

This week the Colonels are back at home at Colonel Stadium for their second home game of the 2023 season.

Henderson County Colonel Head Football Coach Josh Boston talks about the Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado and the takeaways he saw in film, “Very, very talented football team. They got their two recruits in out of Chattanooga and they’ve really upped the capabilities of that team and got them in late July and got them eligible. Number four (Martels Carter), he’s a big play guy, he leads them (in) reception yards, he leads them with touchdowns. He’s one of those guys that they’re going to get him the ball and when they do, he’s got the capability to make big plays. They’ve got the big lineman in at tackle and (a) very good offensive lineman, both of them with multiple SEC offers and so we’ve got to do a good job of containing those two guys tonight. Other than that, they’re just a very good football team as far as talent goes, they’ve killed themselves a lot with penalties to put themselves into some situations. Last week against Mayfield, Mayfield had their chances, got down inside the ten (yard line) twice, fumbled, and threw an interception and just didn’t finish it out, had the chances to do it but (Paducah) Tilghman came away with the first victory over Mayfield in 17 years. They’ve (Paducah Tilghman) got big play talent and we’ve got to do a good job containing it.”

Coach Boston talked about some of the advantages that the Colonels may have against the Blue Tornado, “We’ve got to limit number four (Martels Carter) to big plays, that’s what they ride on and so we’ve got to do a good job of knowing where he’s at. He’s got that big play capability at all times and so making sure we’re understanding where he’s at on the field, whether he’s into formation or if he’s backside by himself or if he’s in the backfield, just always knowing where he’s at. Then the other side is to do what we keep doing and stay disciplined. They (Paducah Tilghman) get a lot of penalties and it puts their offense into bad situations and their defense, they give up chucks of yards based on penalties and so we’ve got to take advantage of that and we have, the past few weeks. Taking advantage of their penalties on our side but making sure that we’re staying more disciplined than them and containing the big play.”

In his 3rd season as the Head Coach of the Blue Tornado, Coach Sean Thompson talked about the keys to the game for the Blue Tornado to come away with a win on the road against the Colonels, “We definitely got to win the turnover battle. You’re not going to win any football game against anybody when you’re turning it over. We want our defense to continue to fly around and create turnovers, at the same time we want to protect the ball, try to keep our offense on the field. We’ve been doing that, so we want to continue to do that because ultimately when you break it down that’s probably the number one indicator in what our success has been, so we want to continue to build on that and this week is no different. We definitely need to limit our penalties. We’ve found ourselves getting a lot of penalties, a lot of just undisciplined things happening that shouldn’t happen. We want to make sure we clean that up but outside of that I think that if you play hard and do those things and keep it clean then you’re good.”

In his 10th season as the Head Coach of the Spartans, Coach Brandon Smith talked about his success and the program’s success in Class 5A, “We’ve had a good experience. I guess in the grand scheme a relatively young program, I think this is our 13th or 14th year, but (we’ve) been able to win three state championships, two at 5A and one at 4A. We’ve experienced a lot of growth. We started out with about 800 students in 3A and now we’re pushing 1,500 students. We’ve learned a lot, figured a lot out over the years as much as what not to do as what to do. A lot of good people have made a commitment to making the program grow and (are) proud of the level that it’s gotten to.”

Kickoff for tonight’s game against the (3-0) Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado is at 7:00 PM at Colonel Stadium in Henderson.
