Slow Start Again Dooms Colonels

The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the Paducah Tilghman Blue Tornado at home in Henderson.

 

The Blue Tornado would be the first to strike as they would cap off a 4 play, 66 yard drive with a 13 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jack James to senior wide receiver JoeAvion Starks, as after the made PAT, the Blue Tornado would have an early 7-0 lead with 10:42 to play in the first quarter. The Blue Tornado defense would stop the Colonels offense and then execute on the next drive after a 8 play, 93 yard drive with a 14 yard touchdown run by senior running back Amari Williams, as after the made PAT, the Blue Tornado extend their lead to 14-0 with 3:51 to play in the first quarter. The Blue Tornado would get a defensive stop and then score really quickly on a 1 play, 54 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jack James to senior wide receiver JoeAvion Starks, as after the made PAT, the Blue Tornado would go up 21-0 with 1:09 to play in the first quarter. The Colonels would finally execute on offense on a 8 play, 53 yard drive that ended with a 45 yard made field goal by junior kicker Carson Weiss, as the Colonels would trail 21-3 with 10:02 to play in the first half. Colonels senior Max Thompson would intercept the ball and on the next drive, the Colonels would execute on a 7 play, 54 yard drive with a 2 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as after the made PAT, the Colonels cut the deficit 21-10 with 5:28 to play in the first half. The Blue Tornado would end the first half with a 6 play, 80 yard drive with a 53 yard touchdown drive by sophomore running back Demarkus Wilson, as after the made PAT, the Blue Tornado would extend their lead to 28-10 heading into halftime. 

 

The Colonels would start with the ball in the second half as Blue Tornado defensive lineman NyYon Fitzgerald would intercept Trajdon Davis’s pass and return it for a 27 yard pick six, as after the made PAT, the Blue Tornado would extend their lead to 35-10 with 10:58 to play in the third quarter. The Colonels would get their first points of the second half on a 8 play, 39 yard drive with a 27 yard field goal made by junior kicker Carson Weiss, as the Colonels would trail the Blue Tornado 35-13 with 7:11 to play in the third quarter. The Colonels defense would get a stop and then execute on the next drive with a 10 play, 48 yard drive that would end with a 5 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to senior tight end Luke Werner, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would cut the deficit to 35-20 with 1:03 to play in the third quarter. The Blue Tornado would execute on their next drive with a 8 play, 80 yard drive that with a 7 yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Demarkus Wilson, as after the made PAT, the Blue Tornado would extend their lead to 42-20 with 9:29 to play in the game. The Colonels would go 3 and out and have punt back to the Blue Tornado as then the Blue Tornado would go 3 and out as on their punt to the Colonels, the Colonels would block their punt and execute with a 4 play, 39 yard drive with a 7 yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would cut the deficit to 42-27 with 5:18 to play in the game. Neither team would score again as the Blue Tornado would come away with a 15 point win over the Colonels, 42-27. The Colonels fall to (1-3) on the season while the Blue Tornado improve to a (4-0) record. 

 

Colonel junior quarterback Trajdon Davis was 9 for 20 with 96 yards, 1 touchdown pass, and 1 interception on the night. Junior running back Tony Burrus rushed 17 times for 122 rushing yards while junior quarterback back Trajdon Davis rushed 21 times with 79 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns on the night. Senior tight end Luke Werner had 1 reception for 5 yards and a touchdown on the night.

 

The Colonels as a team, had 203 yards rushing and 96 yards passing for a total of 299 yards of offense on the night. The Colonel’s defense allowed the Blue Tornado 157 yards rushing and 259 passing yards for a total of 416 yards of total offense on the night, as the Colonels forced 2 fumbles but none recovered, 4 punts, and allowed the Blue Tornado 15 first downs. The Colonels had 4 penalties for 25 yards while the Blue Tornado had 9 penalties for 81 yards on the night.

 

The Colonels will take on the Owensboro Catholic Aces next Friday night, September 15th, on the road at Steele Stadium on the campus of Kentucky Wesleyan College with the kickoff at 7:00 P.M.
