Colonels Look to Get Back in Win Column Against Cardinals

By Ryan Davenport, WSON Sports Correspondent

The Henderson County Colonels suffered a loss against the Owensboro Aces, 41-21, on the road in Owensboro last Friday night.

This week the Colonels are back at home at Colonel Stadium in Kentucky.

Henderson County Colonel Head Football Coach Josh Boston talks about the Mayfield Cardinals and the takeaways he saw in film on them, “They’ve been in a lot of big games. They return pretty much everybody from last year’s team. The running back (Jutoriaus) Starks (is a) very, very good running back, rated one of the best running backs in western Kentucky. (The) quarterback (Zane) Cartwright, he’s a three year starter at quarterback. He’s been in a lot of big games, very very well poised, and does a good job of getting his guys the ball on the perimeter. (Wide) receiver wise they’ve got a lot of good receivers out there that he (Cartwright) does a good job spreading the ball around. They really don’t have a guy that’s got a lot of catches. Their leading receiver I think maybe has eight catches and their second lead receiver has eight catches and so it’s one of those things that he (Cartwright) does a good job of spreading the ball around, making good decisions with the football, (and) getting where it needs to be.”

A look at the halfway point of the 2023 season at some Colonel stat leaders in Class 6A individually and team. Individually for the Colonels junior quarterback Trajdon Davis who is 3rd in touchdown passes thrown in Class 6A. Other individual stats that are notable Trajdon Davis is 6th in rushing touchdowns, junior running back Tony Burrus is 7th in rushing yards while Trajdon Davis is 11th in rushing yards, and Trajdon Davis is 6th in passing yards. Some team stats that are notable are Colonels 13th in Class 6A in points per game, 15th in total rushing yards, 15th in rushing yards allowed per game, and 8th in fumbles forced on the season through 5 games.
