Cardinals Conquer Colonels

The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the Mayfield Cardinals at home at Colonel Stadium on Homecoming night.

 

The Colonels would be the first to strike on the first possession of the game as they would cap off a 4 play, 54 yard drive with a 47 yard touchdown run from junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the blocked PAT, the Colonels would have an early 6-0 lead with 10:27 to play in the first quarter. The Cardinals would strike back with a 3 play, 68 yard drive with a 41 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Zane Cartwright to senior wide receiver Xavier Biggers, after the made PAT, the Cardinals would take a 7-6 lead with 8:57 to play in the first quarter. Both teams would have to punt on their next possession, as the Cardinals would strike next on a 5 play, 73 yard drive with a 89 yard touchdown screen pass from senior quarterback Zane Cartwright to sophomore wide receiver Mak Hoover, as after the made PAT, the Cardinals would extend their lead to 14-6 with 10 seconds to play in the first quarter. The Colonels would then cap off a 9 play, 42 yard drive with a 36 yard field goal by junior kicker Carson Weiss, as the Colonels would narrow the deficit to 14-9 with 9:01 to play in the first half. The Cardinals would respond right back with a 6 play, 43 yard drive that would end with a 34 yard field goal made by senior kicker Lincoln Suiter, as the Cardinals would extend their lead to 17-9 heading into halftime. 

 

The Cardinals would start with the ball in the second half and they would execute on a 1 play, 72 yard touchdown run by senior running back Ju-Ju Starks, as after the made PAT, the Cardinals would extend their lead to 24-9 with 11:48 to play in the third quarter. The Colonels would respond right back with a 11 play, 67 yard drive that would result in a 20 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Trajdon Davis to junior running back Tony Burrus, as the Colonels would go for the 2 point conversion and convert on a pass from senior quarterback Max Thompson to junior quarterback Trajdon Davis, as the Colonels would cut the deficit to 7, 24-17, with 6:13 to play in the third quarter. The Cardinals would respond by returning the kickoff to the Henderson 5 yard line and the Cardinals would run 2 plays for 5 yards that would result in a 2 yard touchdown run by senior running back Ju-Ju Starks, as after the made PAT, the Cardinals would extend their lead to 31-17 with 4:55 to play in the third quarter. The Cardinals would force backup Colonel quarterback Max Thompson to throw an interception, as starting quarterback for the Colonels Trajdon Davis would be injured, and the Cardinals would execute on a 9 play, 75 yard drive that would end with a 7 yard touchdown run by senior running back Ju-Ju Starks, as after the made PAT, the Cardinals would be ahead 38-17 with 9:08 to play in the game. The Colonels late in the game would force a fumble and execute on a 5 play, 49 yard drive with a 25 yard touchdown by senior quarterback Max Thompson to junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would cut the deficit to 38-24 with 2:47 to play in the game. The Cardinals would run the ball and run out the clock and the Henderson County Colonels would suffer a 38-24 loss at home on Homecoming night. The Colonels fall to (1-5) on the season while the Cardinals improve to a (4-1) record.

 

Colonel junior quarterback Trajdon Davis was 5 for 14 with 76 yards and 1 touchdown pass as well as an interception thrown while senior quarterback Max Thompson was 3 for 4 with 49 yards and 1 touchdown pass as well as an interception thrown on the night. Junior running back Tony Burrus rushed 20 times for 104 rushing yards and a touchdown while junior quarterback back Trajdon Davis rushed 13 times with 31 rushing yards on the night. Senior wide receiver Jackson Pendergraft had 4 receptions for 71 yards while junior running back Tony Burrus had 2 receptions for 45 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns on the night. 

 

The Colonels as a team, had 132 yards rushing and 125 yards passing for a total of 257 yards of offense on the night. The Colonel’s defense allowed the Cardinals to 252 yards rushing and 158 passing yards for a total of 410 yards of total offense on the night, as the Colonels forced 1 fumbles and recovered it, 2 punts, and allowed the Cardinals 16 first downs. The Colonels had 5 penalties for 37 yards while the Cardinals had 9 penalties for 101 yards on the night.

 

The 2023 Homecoming King was Jackson Golday while the Homecoming Queen was Chloe Chandler.

 

The Colonels will be on a BYE week next Friday. Colonel’s next game will be at home Friday, October 6th, at Colonel Stadium with the kickoff at 7:00 P.M.
