Colonels Open up District Play at Home Against Mustangs

By Ryan Davenport, WSON Sports Correspondent

The Henderson County Colonels had their bye week last Friday night after a (1-5) start to the season.

This week the Colonels are back at home at Colonel Stadium.

Henderson County Colonel Head Football Coach Josh Boston talks about the McCracken County Mustangs and the takeaways from film on them, “ A team that was kind of like us, they were young starting off. They’ve got the transfer quarterback in from Mayfield and so he was a little raw, the ONeal kid, and so he’s gotten better every single game. You could tell in the early games he (ONeal) was a little uncomfortable and so he’s definitely gotten more comfortable as the games have gone on. Two good (running) backs between the Cornelius kid and the Barragan kid. The Cornelius kid is more of a downhill type of guy, he likes to keep the ball inside the box and get vertical. The Barragan kid, he likes to take the ball outside and hit the perimeter, he wants to be out on the edge, a lot quicker type of (running) back. Receiver wise, they’ve got the Dunbar kid and the Falconite kid they’re the two leading receivers, both of them have the ability to make big plays, they’ve got speed, they get vertical on you fast. They’re a team that’s played some lighter games, (has a) lighter schedule and they’ve been able to come away with some wins but also been in some close games.”

Coach Josh Boston talks about the keys to the game in order to come away with a district win against the Mustangs, “It’s like I told the kids ever since we started looking at McCracken, it’s about us. We’ve got to make sure that we’re doing the right things, we’re in the right spots, we do a good job tackling in space and taking care of our business. They don’t necessarily have guys like Mayfield and (Paducah) Tilghman where we’ve got to double cover them, they need two sets of eyes. You know there’s nobody like that, it’s going to be one on one a lot of situations and we’ve got to win those one on one’s and we got to be in the right spot and do what we need to do to take care of business.”

In his 2nd season as the Head Coach of the Mustangs, Coach Jonathan Smith talked about the keys to the game for the Mustangs to come away with a win on the road against the Colonels, “I think Henderson provides a very hostile environment, I think one of the keys is that we’ve got to be able to show that we can maintain our poise when playing on the road and playing in front of a large crowd, a hostile crowd. I think number two, I have said it multiple times and I’ll continue to say it because it’s true at every level, I think you got to block and you got to tackle. I think the team that does that the best is the team that’s going to come away victorious tonight.”

Kickoff for tonight’s game against the (3-3) McCracken County Mustangs is at 7:00 P.M. at Colonel Stadium in Henderson.

WSON AM/FM will have complete coverage beginning with the pre-game around 6:05 P.M.
