Colonels Win Behind Banks' Historic Night

The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the Daviess County Panthers on the road at Reid Stadium in Owensboro.

The Colonels would be the first to strike on a 7 play, 80 yard drive that resulted in  a 18 yard touchdown pass by senior quarterback Max Thompson to senior wide receiver Koien Banks, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would have a 7-0 lead with 3:09 to play in the first quarter. The Colonels would score two possessions later on a 9 play, 49 yard drive ending in a 3 yard touchdown run by junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would extend their lead to 14-0 with 3:29 to play in the first half. The Colonels would hold the Panthers heading into the locker room with the score 14-0.

The Colonels would start the second half with the football and would strike on a 5 play, 60 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run by junior running back Tony Burrus, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would extend their lead over the Panthers to 21-0 with 9:48 to play in the third quarter. The Colonels would force a turnover and a punt on their next two defensive possessions and then score on a 11 play, 50 yard drive that resulted in a 15 yard touchdown pass from Colonel senior quarterback Max Thompson to senior wide receiver Koien Banks, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would go ahead 28-0 with 10:13 to play in the game. The Panthers would respond with a 9 play, 60 yard drive that would end with a 1 yard touchdown run by senior running back Jackson Lee, as after the made PAT, the Panthers cut the deficit to 28-7 with 6:47 to play in the game. The Colonels would respond quickly on a 1 play, 45 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Max Thompson to senior wide receiver Koien Banks, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would extend their lead to 35-7 with 6:32 to play in the game. The Colonels defense would force a turnover on downs by the Panthers and then the Colonels would execute it into a 4 play, 17 yard drive that would end in a 3 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Max Thompson to senior wide receiver Koien Banks, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would extend their lead to 42-7 with 4:49 to play in the game. The Colonels wouldn’t score again and the Colonel defense wouldn’t allow the Panthers to score as the Colonels would come away with a 42-7 district win on the road against the Daviess County Panthers. The Colonels improve to (3-5) on the season while the Panthers fall to a (2-6) record. 

 

Colonel senior quarterback Max Thompson was 10 for 17 with 222 yards and 4 touchdown passes on the night. Junior running back Tony Burrus rushed 21 times for 62 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns while senior quarterback Max Thompson rushed 15 times with 62 rushing yards on the night. Senior wide receiver Koien Banks had 8 receptions for 197 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns on the night. 

Colonel’s senior wide receiver Koien Banks had 197 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns, in which Banks set a new school record for most touchdown receptions in a single game and most receiving yards in a single game. The previous record of 3 touchdown receptions in a single game caught by 7 different Colonels, once by Rob Egan vs. Graves County in 1997, second by Brian Bivens vs. Ohio County in 1998, thirdly by Alex Fendrick vs. Union County in 2002, fourthly by Chris LaMar (2) times vs. Christian County and Grayson County in 2004, fifthly by Brennan Farley vs. Marshall County in 2013, sixthly Kobe Carter vs. Owensboro in 2014, and lastly by Jackson Pendergraft vs. McCracken County in 2023. The previous record of most receiving yards in a single game was held by Kobe Carter with 194 receiving yards in 2014 vs. Evansville North. 

The Colonels as a team, had 128 yards rushing and 222 yards passing for a total of 350 yards of offense on the night. The Colonel’s defense allowed the Panthers to 159 yards rushing and 18 passing yards for a total of 177 yards of total offense on the night, as the Colonels forced 3 fumbles and recovered two, 4 punts, 1 interception, and allowed the Panthers to get 6 first downs. The Colonels had 6 penalties for 42 yards while the Panthers had 6 penalties for 38 yards on the night.

The Colonels next game will be at home next Friday night, October 20th, at Colonel Stadium taking on the Christian County Colonels on Senior night with the kickoff at 7:00 P.M.
