The Henderson County Lady Colonels faced off against the McCracken County Lady Mustangs in the Round of 16 in the Kentucky High School Girls Soccer State Tournament in Henderson on Monday night.
The Lady Colonels defensively played solid in the first half, as the score at halftime was 0-0. Then in the second half, the Lady Colonels would continue their dominant defensive performance and would eventually get their offense going in which with 18:55 to play in the game, the Lady Colonels scored on a goal from junior midfielder Taylor Dunn and senior forward Ashton Lynam with the assist to give the Lady Colonels a 1-0 lead over the Lady Mustangs. The Lady Colonels junior goalkeeper Sarah Mackey saved a handfuly of goals in the last 15 minutes of the game the Lady Colonels would come away with the win 1-0 against the Lady Mustangs and end their undefeated season. The Lady Colonels improve to (14-8) on the season while the Lady Mustangs end with a (21-1-2) record.
The Lady Colonels had the one goal from junior Taylor Dunn and one assist from senior Ashton Lynam. The Lady Mustangs had 13 shots on goal to the Lady Colonels 5 shots on goal. Lady Colonels junior goalie Sarah Mackey ended the game with 13 saves on the night.
Head Coach of the Lady Colonels, Ben Dempsey, talked about his team’s performance on the night, “This is another game in a row we had to defend for a big portion of the game. That’s the kind of game plan we’ve gone with over the last couple of weeks and the kids are buying into it. It actually was them (McCracken County) a few weeks ago we lost to 2-0 where our kids thought you know this game plan kind of works, like it takes away a lot of space that they have, it frustrated them. You could tell as the second half wore on they continued, as good teams to keep coming at us, but our kids were resilient tonight and got one goal in transition and we held onto like our lives depended on it.”
The Lady Colonels will face off against the Bethlehem Lady Banshees this Thursday night, October 19th, on the road in the Elite 8 of the Kentucky High School Girls Soccer State Tournament with the time TBD.
