Colonels Open the Playoffs at Home Against the Dragons

By Ryan Davenport, WSON Sports Correspondent

The Henderson County Colonels suffered a loss to the Owensboro Red Devils, 34-6, last Friday night on the road.

This week the Colonels are at home at Colonel Stadium.

Henderson County Colonel Head Football Coach Josh Boston talks about the Warren Central Dragons and the takeaways from film on them, “A lot like Christian County. They’ve probably got more speed than Christian (County) but they struggle a little bit more upfront, they’re not as big upfront as Christian County..They’ve got guys that can make big plays at any point time in the game. They’ve probably got four or five guys on their roster that are faster than anybody we’ve got on our team. They’ve got big play ability. They struggle a bit upfront, that kind of gets them in some down and distances that aren’t favorable to them, gets them out of what they want to do. They get guys in space, they can go. Like I said it’s going to be a lot of Christian County. We’re going to have to make sure that we are where we are supposed to be, being physical, dominating the line of scrimmage, taking that aspect of the game away from them, trying to make them one dimensional, and limit them to their big plays because in last weeks game that’s what kept them in the game last week. They’re a 1-9 football team but they are probably the best 1-9 football team there is just because of their athletic ability and so they just haven’t been able to win in some games just because like I said they struggle a little bit upfront and so we’ve got to make sure we’re sound upfront.”

Coach Josh Boston talks about where the Colonels have some advantages against the Dragons, “We’ve got to win the game upfront. Knowing with the injuries that we have in the skill positions, we are healthy upfront  and we’ve got to make sure that’s our advantage going in and we’ve got to make sure that’s what we’ve got to do throughout the night is we’ve got to win both offensively and defensively upfront and win that battle to give ourself a good chance on offense, to move the chains to do what we’ve got to do. Then defensively get them into some down and distances that aren’t favorable to what they want to do running the Wing T.”

In his 3rd season as the Head Coach of the Dragons, Coach Mark Nelson talked about the keys to the game for the Dragons to come away with a win on the road in the playoffs against the Colonels to keep their season alive, “We have to control the clock, we’ve got to keep their offense off the field. You may look at us and say well why are they (Warren Central) going so slow, well the more clock we eat the less clock their offense has and so when their offense is on the field they’re going to move the ball. We’ve got to come up with anything on the ground, fumbles we need to recover it, if we get a chance to intercept one we need to get them. We need the turnover and then we need to cut our penalties down because you know they kill you. If you have a penalty jumping offside and you give them (Henderson County) 1st and 5, they’re going to get it and they’re going to move the football so we need to keep the football in our possession.”

Kickoff for tonight’s game against the (1-9) Warren Central Dragons is at 7:30 P.M. at Colonel Stadium in Henderson.

WSON AM/FM will have complete coverage beginning with the pre-game around 6:35 P.M.
