Colonels Defense Dominates Dragons

The Henderson County Colonels faced off against the Warren Central Dragons at home at Colonel Stadium in the 1st Round of the Class 6A State Football Playoffs.

 

The Colonels would strike first on their first drive of the night with a 11 play, 83 yard drive that ended with a 1 yard touchdown run by senior wide receiver Jackson Pendergraft, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would take an early 7-0 lead over the Dragons with 6:13 to play in the first quarter. The Colonels defense would force the Dragons to punt and then the Colonels would execute it with a 8 play, 41 yard drive that ended with a 37 yard field goal made by junior kicker Carson Weiss, as the Colonels would extend their lead to 10-0 with 18 seconds to play in the first quarter. The Colonels would force another punt and then turn in into more points on a 2 play, 45 yard drive that resulted in a 18 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Max Thompson to junior wide receiver Max Meadows, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would extend their lead over the Dragons to 17-0 with 8:30 to play in the first half. The Colonels defense stopped the Dragons again and then executed on a 7 play, 60 yard drive that ended with a 32 yard field goal made by junior kicker Carson Weiss as the Colonels would go up 20-0 with 2:57 to play in the first half. Neither team would score again in the first half and the Colonels would hold a 3 possession lead heading into the locker room.

 

The Colonels would strike first in the second half after a muffed punt by the Dragons, the Colonels would turn it into points on a 4 play, 31 yard drive that resulted in a 11 yard touchdown run by senior running back Eli Green, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would extend their lead to 27-0 with 5:17 to play in the third quarter. The Colonels would force the Dragons to  turnover on downs and then execute with a 8 play, 54 yard drive that resulted in a 14 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Max Thompson to senior wide receiver Landon Gish, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would extend their lead over the Dragons to 34-0 with 4:39 to play in the game. The Colonels would force a turnover and turn it into points on a 4 play, 17 yard drive that ended with a 9 yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Jack Dalton to senior wide receiver Jackson Pendergraft, as after the made PAT, the Colonels would have a 41-0 lead over the Dragons with 2:39 to play in the game. Neither team would score again as the Colonels defense dominated the whole game and shutout the Warren Central Dragons 41-0. The Colonels improve their record to (5-6) while the Dragons end their season with a (1-10) record. 

 

Colonel’s senior quarterback Max Thompson was 12 for 15 with 187 passing yards and 2 touchdown passes while throwing 1 interception on the night. Senior running back Eli Green rushed 14 times for 141 rushing yards while senior quarterback Max Thompson rushed 16 times for 78 yards on the night. Senior wide receiver Jackson Pendergraft had 8 receptions for 66 yards and 1 receiving touchdown while junior wide receiver Max Meadows had 4 receptions for 65 yards and 1 receiving touchdown on the night. 

 

The Colonels as a team, had 263 yards rushing and 238 yards passing for a total of 501 yards of offense on the night. The Colonel’s defense allowed Warren Central to 37 yards rushing and 20 passing yards for a total of 57 yards of total offense on the night, as the Colonels forced 7 punts, 3 fumbles, and allowed Warren Central to get 6 first downs. The Colonels had 12 penalties for 120 yards while Warren Central had 3 penalties for 20 yards on the night.

 

The Colonels’ continue postseason play in the second round of the Playoffs at home next Friday night, November 10th, at Colonel Stadium taking on the McCracken County Mustangs with the kickoff time TBD.
