Escaped Ohio inmate sentenced for role in May escape that ended in Henderson

An Ohio inmate who was apprehended while on the lam in Henderson has been sentenced to prison for escape.

Henderson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Herbert McKee Jr. said that James Lee, 48, was sentenced Wednesday to eight to 12 years in prison.

Lee and fellow inmate Bradley Gillespie escaped from Allen-Oakwood Prison in Ohio last May. This launched a massive manhunt that ended in Henderson.

Local authorities arrested Lee after the pair’s vehicle crashed following a chase in Henderson. Gillespie escaped on foot. His body was found days later floating in the Ohio River.

Lee will serve time in addition to the eight-year sentence for fleeing/evading police in Henderson, and also in addition to an 18-year sentence he received in 2021 for burglary in Auglaize, Ohio, according to McKee.

McKee said he negotiated a deal with the Ohio Governor’s Office for Lee to serve his Kentucky and Ohio sentences in the state of Ohio, saving Kentucky taxpayers his housing costs.
