KYTC D-2 Road Report

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (April 05, 2024) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet anticipates ongoing work zone construction and long-term maintenance activities at the following locations will impact traffic during the week of April 7-13.

April 8 Solar Eclipse — It’s Here
Kentuckians should prepare for heavy traffic when the moon’s shadow sweeps across Kentucky’s western counties and a dozen other states about 2 p.m., CDT, on Monday, April 8. Travelers planning to view the total solar eclipse should expect congested highways and limited parking at rest stops.  Pack essentials such as water, snacks, and bring some patience for the heavy traffic congestion.  Don’t forget the patience.  KYTC is lifting lane restrictions in select work zones and are informing commercial truck drivers of expected traffic. Post eclipse, the Pennyrile Parkway south just north of Nortonville is down to one lane, creating a possible pinch point for outgoing traffic. Visit KYTC’s eclipse page at bit.ly/kytc24eclipse for spectator, travel and planning tips.  Real-time traffic information is available at GoKY.ky.gov or on the Waze app.

Caldwell County — Crews will be conducting brush removal along I-69 between the 79 and 82 mile markers all week. Motorists on US 62 should look for flaggers on Tuesday as crews conduct ditching operations between the 13 and 13 MM. On Wednesday KYTC will be performing bank work on KY 139 between the 9.5 and 10.5 MM with flaggers present. Thursday and Friday crews will be repairing potholes on various rounds around the county.

Daviess County — On Tuesday, crews will be ditching on KY 554 and installing signs on US 231, with lane restrictions and flaggers on site. On Wednesday there will be lane restrictions on KY 144 near the 12.8 MM for shoulder repair. Crews will have one lane blocked on KY 298 both Thursday and Friday as they perform ditching operations.

Hancock County — There will be a single lane closer on KY 2124 on Tuesday to allow for replacement of a culvert at the 2.8 MM. KY 2124 will be totally blocked on Wednesday from 8 am to 2:30 p.m. to complete the project. On Friday, crews will be conducting mobile pothole patching on US 60, KY 69 and KY 1389.

Muhlenberg County — KY 973 will be closed on Tuesday between the seven and eight mile markers to allow for the replacement of a drainage tile. KY 2270 will be closed between the five and six mile markers Wednesday through Friday for slide repairs.

Ohio County — Motorists should look for lane restrictions and flaggers on US 231 on Tuesday as crews install new signage. There will also be lane restrictions and flaggers both Tuesday and Wednesday on KY 261, KY 1414 and KY 2668 for brush removal and ditching operations. Crews will be conducting mobile pothole repairs on I-165, brushing on KY 54 and ditching on KY 1414 both Thursday and Friday.

Other things of note:

I-24 Welcome Center Closed at KY-TN State Line — The Christian County Welcome Center along I-24 Westbound near the 92mm at the KY-TN State Line is temporarily closed for drain line repair.  Portable toilets will be stationed along the rear sidewalks, designated exclusively for large truck parking ONLY; no passenger vehicles are permitted.  Motorists should plan their travel accordingly and use alternative rest stops during this period.

I-24 Tennessee River Bridge at 29mm — This work zone includes a traffic shift with two-11 ft. travel lanes for both eastbound and westbound traffic on the I-24 Tennessee River Bridge at the 29mm. There is an 8 ft.-6 in. max load width and 13 ft- 6 in. max height restriction, a 55 MPH speed limit, enhanced enforcement, double fines, and a concrete barrier wall.  This work zone will remain up on April 8.  During peak travel, local commuters should consider a self-detour via U.S. 62 and KY 453 between Exit 27 and Exit 31. Some occasional lane restrictions will be required at night and on weekends as the construction season progresses.  Target for completion of this bridge rehab project is Dec 1, 2024.
