Former Owensboro Police Officer Indicted After Kentucky State Police Investigation

OWENSBORO, Ky.– A former Owensboro Police Officer accused of sexually assaulting a homeless woman was indicted Tuesday.

A Daviess County Grand Jury indicted Aleph G. Zavala, 35, of Owensboro, on charges of first-degree sodomy, first-degree strangulation and first-degree sexual abuse.

The indictment stems from a complaint that began on Dec. 8, 2023, when Owensboro Police Department received a burglary alarm at U-Haul Storage in the 2800 block of West Parrish Avenue in Owensboro.

Officers discovered a homeless woman residing in one of the storage units. The woman had permission to stay there from the business owner.

After the officers left the scene, the woman alleged that Zavala returned and sexually assaulted her.

The next day, Kentucky State Police launched an investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct. Zavala was arrested and lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center with a $100,000 full cash bond.

This is an ongoing investigation by KSP.
