Henderson, KY, USA / WSON AM & FM

Henderson County picked up a hard-fought region road win at Lyon County, edging the Lyons 53-51 on Monday night.

The Colonels led 18-14 after the first quarter behind nine points from Amare Stewart, then pushed the lead to 26-18 at halftime. Henderson stayed in control through three, taking a 41-31 advantage into the fourth.

Rebounding proved to be a major key as the Colonels out-rebounded the Lyons 33-24, despite Lyon entering the night as the region’s top rebounding team. Turnovers were an issue for both sides — Henderson committed 23, while Lyon had 18. Lyon went 19-of-26 from the free-throw line and 4-of-18 from three-point range. Henderson finished 6-of-16 at the stripe but was efficient from deep, knocking down 6-of-10 threes.

Lyon County rallied late, forcing several Henderson turnovers and living at the free-throw line. The Lyons went 11-of-12 at the stripe in the fourth quarter and briefly took a one-point lead late.

Trailing 50-49 with 30 seconds remaining, Stewart delivered the game’s biggest play — a driving basket plus the foul to put Henderson back on top, 52-50. Each team split a pair of free throws down the stretch.

Lyon County had one last chance with 5 seconds remaining, but after the Colonels tipped a pass out of bounds with 0.5 seconds left, the Lyons were unable to get a shot off.

Amare Stewart led Henderson with 25 points, knocking down 5-of-6 from three and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line, while also pulling down seven rebounds. Zayden Martin added 14 points and seven boards. Xavion Johnson finished with four points and five rebounds. Jarren Byrum scored three. MaLaikye Taylor had two points and six rebounds. Thomas chipped in two points and one rebound, while Braden Williams added three points, one rebound, and three blocks.

Henderson County improves to 15-4 and is back in action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at home against Webster County.
