Henderson, KY – The Salvation Army in Western Kentucky is joining communities across the nation in celebrating National Salvation Army Week, May 11–17, 2026, a time dedicated to recognizing the organization’s mission, history, and year-round service to neighbors in need.
National Salvation Army Week was first proclaimed in 1954 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who encouraged Americans to recognize the organization’s positive impact and to support its work in their own communities. More than 70 years later, The Salvation Army continues to serve as a trusted partner in communities, meeting human needs without discrimination and offering help, hope, and healing in times of crisis and stability alike.
“National Salvation Army Week gives us an opportunity to pause and thank our community while also sharing how vital this ministry is every day of the year,” said Captain Douglas Monroe, Corps Officer of The Salvation Army of Henderson. “While this is one special week of recognition, hunger, hardship, and crisis do not take a week off, and neither does The Salvation Army.”
Local Impact in Western Kentucky
Throughout 2025, The Salvation Army units in Henderson, Madisonville, and Owensboro provided critical support to individuals and families through a wide range of services, including:
- Shelter
- Food Assistance
- Angel Tree program
In total, during 2025, the local Salvation Army unit provided:
- 47,919 meals served
- 7,615 nights of shelter or housing assistance
- 56,269 individuals or families assisted
“Our doors are open because of the generosity of this community,” Monroe added. “Every meal served, every bed provided, and every prayer offered reflects neighbors helping neighbors.”
Give with Joy
This year’s National Salvation Army Week coincides with the organization’s national theme, “Give with Joy,” inspired by 2 Corinthians 9:7, which reminds us that giving should come from the heart.
Giving can take many forms: financial contributions, volunteer hours, donated goods, prayers, or simple acts of kindness. Each form of giving strengthens the work of The Salvation Army and ensures help is available when it is needed most.
“We are deeply grateful for the joy with which our community gives,” said Captain Monroe. “Because of that joy and generosity, lives are changed every single day.”
