EVANSVILLE, IN – Ascension St. Vincent Evansville is celebrating a historic milestone with the graduation of its very first class from the Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Internal Medicine Residency Program.
The three trailblazing graduates—Nicholas Clough, MD, Colin MacKay, MD, and Jesse Doyle, MD—successfully transitioned from being the program’s “pioneers” into highly skilled physicians, laying the foundation for future medical education in the region, according to a news release.
In a major advancement for local healthcare access, two of the three graduating residents have chosen to remain in Evansville to provide services at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville. Drs. Clough and MacKay will work as hospitalists and residency faculty members, where they will directly train and guide upcoming generations of internal medicine residents.
“Building an Internal Medicine residency from scratch requires more than just clinical skill; it requires pioneers,” said Program Director, Dr. Robert Ficalora. “When we started, we had blueprints, but no footprints. These three stepped into the unknown and faced our inevitable bumps with grace, patience, and unwavering leadership. They exemplified clinical standards in our wards and clinics, established our culture of camaraderie, and anchored our services.”
The members of this historic inaugural graduating class include:
Jesse Doyle, MD: Hailing from Buffalo, Minnesota, Dr. Doyle earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities before graduating from Ross University School of Medicine. Dr. Doyle will continue his training as a Pulmonary Critical Care fellow at Indiana University Indianapolis.
Nicholas Clough, MD: A native Hoosier from Indianapolis, Dr. Clough earned his undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Cell Biology from the University of South Florida before completing his medical education at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Colin MacKay, MD: Originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, Dr. MacKay completed his undergraduate degrees in biology at Western University London and behavioral neuroscience at Laurentian University Sudbury, where he received the Dr. Dan Andreae Scholarship for excellence in neuroscience. A graduate of St. George’s University School of Medicine, he also studied abroad at Northumbria University in the UK through the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program.
The Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Internal Medicine Residency is an academic program serving a large catchment area across southwest Indiana, northern Kentucky, and southeast Illinois. By retaining two of its inaugural graduates to serve as full-time faculty and hospitalists, Ascension St. Vincent Evansville directly advances its mission to combat regional healthcare shortages and provide top-tier, long-term medical care to the Tri-State area.
