Colonels Fall to GRC in 53-48 Shootout



HENDERSON, Ky
 — In a game that featured more than 1,000 combined yards of offense and came down to the final second, the Henderson County Colonels fell to George Rogers Clark 53-48 Friday night at Colonel Stadium.

The offensive slugfest featured 1,008 combined yards between the two teams, with both offenses consistently trading scores throughout the night. In the end, GRC made enough plays late to escape Henderson with the five-point victory.

Despite the loss, the Colonels turned in one of their most productive offensive performances of the season, finishing with 508 total yards, including 261 rushing yards and 247 passing yards.

Senior quarterback Brody Belt led the way for Henderson County both through the air and on the ground. Belt rushed 10 times for 129 yards and two touchdowns, including an explosive 88-yard touchdown run. Through the air, he completed 14-of-24 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

Senior tight end Christian Haygan had a standout night, hauling in six passes for 111 yards and his first receiving touchdown of the season.

Sophomore wide receiver Jackson Loveless continued his strong season with seven receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

Senior running backs Jack Dalton and Kingston Shidler also contributed heavily to the Colonels’ ground attack. Dalton carried 17 times for 85 yards, while Shidler added 43 yards on six carries.

Henderson County moved the chains 20 times and did not commit a turnover. The Colonels finished 2-of-9 on third down and 1-of-5 on fourth down while being flagged 10 times for 92 yards.

GRC finished with 500 total yards, narrowly trailing Henderson County’s 508. The Cardinals rushed for 204 yards and passed for 296 yards while recording 25 first downs.


Defensively, the Colonels recorded 50 total tackles and forced two GRC turnovers.

Parker Shappell led Henderson County with eight tackles, followed by Spencer Kellen, Kieran Cole and Christian Haygan with six apiece. Jack Dalton added five tackles.

Haygan also had a major impact defensively, recording both of Henderson County’s sacks while also blocking a PAT.


Shappell forced one fumble, while Jaxton Duncan and Jaden Williams each recovered a fumble.

GRC converted 6-of-11 third downs and all four of its fourth-down attempts. The Cardinals were penalized seven times for 63 yards.


The Colonels ultimately came up just short in a game that was decided in the final seconds.

With the loss, Henderson County falls to 3-4 on the season and will now enter fall break before returning to action.

The Colonels will return to the field on Friday, Oct. 9, when they travel to Hopkinsville to face Christian County High School at the Stadium of Champions. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
