The Henderson Humane Society said there are two confirmed positive cases of canine parvovirus within its shelter.
Humane Society Board President Christa Bennett confirmed to WSON that the shelter was in a temporary lockdown out of an abundance of caution and to protect the dogs in their care and in the community. They said no dogs will be entering or leaving the shelter while they work with veterinary partners to implement outbreak response protocol.
Bennett said the shelter underwent a deep clean on Wednesday night and have worked to quarantine any known exposed dogs.
She said the shelter will be on temporary lockdown throughout the weekend at the minimum as they continue to assess and monitor for symptoms.
“We have a plan in place for any dogs that must be brought in by animal control to keep them segregated,” Bennett said.
Because parvovirus is highly contagious, the Humane Society asked for patience and understanding while they take the precautions necessary to protect the animals and our community.
Officials said if you have recently adopted or fostered a dog from the Humane Society and your dog develops vomiting, diarrhea, unusual lethargy, loss of appetite, or other concerning symptoms, please contact your veterinarian promptly and let them know there may have been a potential parvovirus exposure.
