PADUCAH, Ky. — The Henderson County Colonels put up 35 points against district rival McCracken County on Friday night, but the Mustangs’ explosive start proved too much to overcome in a 49-35 road loss.

McCracken County (6-3) scored on its first three touches of the football, building an early advantage and setting the tone for the district matchup. A 94-yard kickoff return touchdown by wide receiver Jakari Matchem, was followed by Matchem’s 74-yard touchdown reception and a 45-yard touchdown reception by Jude Lanier, giving the Mustangs three explosive scoring plays to open the contest. Albeit, all that came after the Colonels four-minute, opening drive was capped by a touchdown run by Jack Dalton.

The fast start helped McCracken County take a commanding 41-14 lead into halftime, putting Henderson County (4-5) in a difficult position heading into the second half.

Despite the deficit, the Colonels continued to battle. Henderson County’s final three touchdowns came during the last 17 minutes of the game, spanning the third and fourth quarters, as the offense continued to fight to close the gap.

The Mustangs made the most of their opportunities in the passing game, consistently producing big plays against the Colonels’ defense.

Defensively, Haygan made an impact in multiple areas, recording four total tackles, one sack and a blocked punt. Aden James added a sack, giving the Colonels two on the night.
